Lord Dakshinamurti is Lord Shiva manifest as the first teacher. It is said in the Puranas that Lord Brahma, the creator, in the beginning of creation created out of his mind four progeny known as the Sanatkumaras: Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana and Sanatkumara. It is said that Lord Brahma asked them to join him in the task of creation. However, they were renunciates by nature, and even at that age, possessed a keen desire to know the truth. So, they set out in the northern direction in search of truth and then performed penance. Pleased with them, Lord Shiva appeared before them as a teacher, seated under a banyan tree, facing the south, and imparted Brahma-vidya (knowledge of Brahman) to the Sanatkumaras.

Purna Vidya, the spiritual heritage of India is taught to the kids in the same traditional way through an unbroken sampradaya, that began with Lord Dakshinamurti, uplifted and maintained by Veda Vyasa and Adi Sankara, now handed directly to us by Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati and his students.

We start the class with simple yoga exercises and meditation and japa. The children then chant slokas/mantras which they have learnt. New slokas are taught every month. We also explain pujavidhanam (how to do puja), purpose of puja and prayers etc. Every month a topic is chosen for discussion. Currently we are dicsussing (1) Action and Reation (2) Unity in Diversity and (3)Value of Values. After the discussions, children write essays and present them to the whole class. A considerable time is spent in learning to write and pronounce the slokas in the devanagri script. The class ends with a little puja followed by prasadam.

At the end of the year children put up a stage performance for their family and friends. The guest of honor are Sri Vijay Kapoor and his wife Pammi Kapoor. The stage performance is followed by a lunch.

We also supplement the Purna Vidya books by additional material. Work books and some light homework is also given to the children.
